7/2: Nasi Campur - Rice with odds 'n ends. Bits of various unidentified meats. Surprisingly tasty and mega cheap. 7/4: Mie Ayam, Deep Fried Banana Fritters - Mie Ayam is a chicken noodle meal, and it was super good. Well seasoned and, yes, it had veggies in it. This particular one also had a meatball … Continue reading New Foods List – July

My First Published Photo
Hey, all! It's me again. Another quick note on something REALLY cool. I got an e-mail today from the Managing Editor of Schmap.com (they put together comprehensive city guides online) and they've included one of my photos in their most recent edition! Here is a copy of what I recieved: Hi Rhys, I am delighted … Continue reading My First Published Photo
Quick Update
We landed in Kuala Lumpur yesterday afternoon, so we are no longer in Indonesia, for those that are following the story regarding the hotel bombings in Jakarta. Do not worry, we are just fine. Malaysia so far has been night and day different as far as cleanliness, safety, and general comfort level.
Indonesia – Thoughts and Impressions
Indi and I fly out of Indonesia in about twelve hours and head to Malaysia. I'm very excited about this, and have been spending the last few hours thinking about my time here and what I've seen. Here are some of my preliminary observations: 1. Western Culture Creep. Some parts of Indonesia are very old-school … Continue reading Indonesia – Thoughts and Impressions
Music Soothes the Soul
I've had a few opportunities on this trip to just sit back and immerse myself in music. Most of it has been from my iPod, but a few times I've been able to relax and enjoy some local fare. In Ubud, Bali, we were across the street from a business that made drums. At various … Continue reading Music Soothes the Soul

We've had a good past couple of days with a mixture of final recovery from a little stomach bug and spending some great time out with ourselves and friends. We've gone to karaoke again (I sang more, trying to find artists I can actually … Continue reading Last Weekend in Indonesia
Surabaya: Act II
Karaoke last night was such a blast. I sang for the first time since my wedding. I'm a little sad that they didn't have the artists I wanted (Warren Zevon, Arcade Fire, The Doors, Bruce Springsteen, et al) but I did find a few that I could sing. I found the most blatantly American song … Continue reading Surabaya: Act II
Surabaya
Remember when I said Auckland was busy? Zomg. Surabaya is the hectic pace and energy of Kuta on steroids. Everyone is going everywhere at the same time. It's also the dirtiest city I've ever been to. It makes for quite a picture. Once I had a small nap (couldn't sleep long) one of my hosts, … Continue reading Surabaya
Qu’est’ce que c’est? – Fire, Trial by…
(Warning - NSFW. Language.) Well, Cirebon is cheaper, but I can't tell you much else about it. I tried not to write much about my growing unease in Java, partially because I didn't want to give solidity to any kind of fear. I am notoriously stubborn. It's true I had some questionable-at-best experiences in Yogya, … Continue reading Qu’est’ce que c’est? – Fire, Trial by…
